Ear-ology* and Audiology

(*Thank you, Diana, for that term!)

Greetings, all! I've spent an unpleasant week with my databases and my accounting class projects with only a few minutes stolen here and there for stitching. After tomorrow, I'm stitching my butt off (and maybe even going to the grocery store and running the vaccuum). Since it's been dark and gloomy, I got out something fresh-looking that I haven't worked on for a few months: Ann Smith by the Scarlet Letter. I'm working on it with the called-for AVAS and using LL's 40 count Magnolia. This may be my brightest sampler--the Magnolia is intensely bright cream, and in fact, so assertively bright that although the color is nice, I don't think it would work as a neutral for a lot of samplers. This sampler has a ton of over-one stitching, including the whole center panel of Adam and Eve, the serpent and the tree, so I'm looking forward to working on it during the day when I can make some headway, since probably a quarter of the sampler is stitched over one thread.

I want to get going on some of these over-one samplers, since I don't figure my laser close-up vision is going to last forever. My hearing's going, especially in places with lots of background noise, like large noisy restaurants, but given the choice, like a lot of stitchers I suspect, I'd take my vision over my hearing any day. I attribute my hearing loss to loud music and to heredity (my grandmother hated her hearing aids and used to leave them off, especially when they squealed, as they frequently did; and my mother has new all-digital very expensive hearing aids that she doesn't wear either--who knows why although she's told me she is not fond of the little voice in them that tells her things--and I figure I'm headed the same way. The little voice, by the way, is real: I've heard it. It announces things like a battery change being necessary; it does not instruct her to take an axe to her family while they sleep and it does not relay messages from the government. (As far as I know.) Well! SOMEONE has had too much caffeine today!

In between creating lookup lists and defining multi-field primary keys in my dabase projects, I have had ample opportunity to surf the web, ogle your projects and think of new charts that I need. The kind ladies at In Stitches are probably tired of hearing from me this week; at each new online discovery I'd call up and request that they add the chart to my towering pile, to be retrieved by me next week (oh heavenly day).

Here's one of my new-start whims: The Hunt by Linda McNally of Homespun Samplar. The project calls for GAST Brethren Blue on 32 count Autumn Fields Vintage Linen by Zweigart, but I am stitching it using an unlabeled overdyed silk from my stash and 36 count Picture This Plus in Legacy also from my stash. This is a fun stitch that will be easy to finish.

Speaking of ears, watch Peaches' ears in the next photos. She's speaking with them.

Translation: happy week ahead!

Peaches hears things that hearing aids can only dream of. Imagine if a rabbit could program hearing aid messages: "you will plant all the yard in vegetables I like", "there is no such thing as having too many bun treats", etc. Congrats on the sampler stockpile!

Oh my gosh! Ann is stunning. I love the colors in it. I had totally forgotten about The Hunt Sampler, too... and how badly I had to have it. Yeah, never stitched it. LOVE your start!

Ann is gorgeous. Aren't the bright colors a pleasure to work with during the dreary winter months. I didn't realize how much over one Ann had... I may have to rethink that new start. lol
The Hunt Sampler looks good too!

Your work on Ann looks stunning as does your start on The Hunt Sampler! Love the fiber color you are using on it!

Peaches is a cutie!

I've had 'hearing confusion' when there are numerous sound sources around me since my mid 20's. My biological father has been wearing hearing aids forever and none of them really work for him. But I'll take it over vision loss any day!!!

Oh I love Peaches' ears! They're like little antennas!

Wow, your Ann is just sparkling! Very beautiful indeed.

I'm glad you've started the Hunt sampler. I have had in in my stash too. Love your blue.

Happy stashing, and stitching!

Your Ann Smith is beautiful! And your Mr.Squirrel in The Hunt is not nearly as scary-looking as the one in my Quaker Halloween! Happy stitching!

Glenna Ann is beautiful!! Note to self...pick a larger count for myself when I start her! That's a lot of over one! EEEEK! Hope you survive your database work! ;o)

Peaches is such a cutie. You can tell so much about what's on a bunny's mind by what their ears are doing.

You are making some scrumptious progress on Ann!! Beautifully stunning colors!! And I too like the Hunt...when does it ever end? Well, I am thinking it won't, at least for me!

Love the samplers! Ann is gorgeous and sooo colorful -- love it! I'm looking forward to seeing how your Hunt Sampler turns out. I stitched it a couple of years ago in green, and I really like the blue you're using. I keep meaning to stitch one of the motifs and make it up as a scissor fob, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Have a great week!

Ann Smith is really beautiful, and I LOVE the floss color on The Hunt Sampler, whatever it might be.

I remember my grandmother always turning her hearing aides off because she didn't like hearing EVERYTHING. It was such a change from hearing almost nothing.

I have the Hunt Sampler in my stash also, all kitted up... I changed the thread color too. It'll be fun to watch you stitch yours.

If the Princess is right near me and I tell her to "Come Here" she acts like she can't here it. But - if she is 50 feet away with a slightly open window in between and I go "Pssst" she will come like a Rocket! "Pssst" always means "treat"! Oh what Peaches can hear!

I just love your start on the Hunt Sampler--gorgeous color of blue you've picked!

And how cute is Peaches--I can see why you named her that :)

Glenna, do have some more cafeine, you had me in stitches with this post! Sorry to hear/read about your hearing though. My Mum's the same.
Your sampler is gorgeous, but all of that over-one stitching would do my head in, with or without laser eyes.

Funny, that Hunt Sampler. The three letters you stitched so far (V.U.T.) is the Dutch abbreviation for 'retirement', so when my eyes caught the picture, I instantly thought you were sending us a message. Guess not.

They're both amazing - what a great choice of thread for The Hunt!

Good Heavens I've been linked in the heading!! I understand it is possible to stimulate and enliven the auditory nerve by massaging in front and behind the ear. Peaches certainly has peachy ears <3

Ann is gorgeous! I love the parrot. And such pretty colors. I have the same problem with hearing - I've been told by a doctor that it has to do with my hearing being supersensitive. So, when I'm in a situation with a lot of background noise - it overloads my ears. Who knows. But it's annoying! Love the "earology" from Peaches!!

Peaches is so scrumptious! What was she saying, I wonder? I love Ann! That is a lot of over one...you are wise to do it sooner than later. I don't think I'd want voices in my head either. I also don't think I would be able to choose between sight and hearing... I'd be lost without stitching/reading and music. Let's just hope it doesn't come to that.

I love your Hunt Sampler. I will need to look for that one.

As for the hearing and hearing aids, I hate wearing mine and in all honesty do not miss the hearing world too much. My only regret, should I ever become truly "stone deaf" would be enjoyment I get from all the various forms of music I enjoy. Now I merely crank up the volume really loud and enjoy what I can. (Classical tends to be best when loud!)

Ann is absolutely gorgeous! More beautiful colors you are stitching. Have fun with The Hunt - such a nice shade of blue. LOVE the bunny ears!

While searching for a photo of the chart of my current UFO to be finished this to send to a friend (wow, that's a confusing sentence!), I ran across your blog post from Feb 2010. You were then starting over on the Janet Gibson Scottish Swan Sampler. I started this 3 or 4 years ago when the designer from Whimsey & Wit was selling the chart at our Regional EGA seminar. I love the piece, flaws and all!!! and decided this is the year that it must be finished. I wanted to email you "privately" as it were, but couldn't find your email address, so sorry for the totally un-related post to this particular blog entry! Anyway, I'd love to know where you are on this piece or if it's now done and I just haven't been reading blogs long enough to know that!

And if you click my name to go to my blog - you'll get nothing because I can't type the address right! Silly me!

By the way, I love everything you've done and have to close my eyes to keep from being further enabled than I already am. Keep up the good work!
